The nearest "real" medical facility would have been about 150 miles away had Chappy's back actually been broken.  The fact that Chappy had about 27 dollars for the rest of the trip probably wouldn't have enticed the Doctors to give him the first rate medical attention he would need either.  Luckily he was okay.
