Overhauling Skim Online? - 12-9-1999 - Skim Online is going through a massive update process. Every page is going to be reworked using a new template and color scheme. There may be some bad links during the process, but I hope not! I hope to have it completely finished by the end of the year. About.com is a huge site and a great resource because every category is reviewed by people who are knowledgeable on the subject. I have been recommending it to people since before their name was about.com and continue to recommend it to you. Santa Cruz Contest Results - Sept 22, 1999 - Here are the results for the Santa Cruz contest.
Santa Cruz Contest Dates Changed - Sept 7 1999 - The Santa Cruz contest, originally scheduled for Sept 4-5 has been changed to Sept 11-12. It will be held at the same spot, 26th street in Santa Cruz CA George Bryan Wins Gold Coast Classic - Sept 7 1999 - In the absence of his older brother Bill Bryan, George Bryan won the Gold Coast Classic Skimboard contest in Ventura County CA. As always the event was held at Deer Creek Beach. The top four was rounded out with Kai Bond (2nd), Chris Rudolph (3rd) and Keith Peery taking fourth place. New Skimboard Technology - Aug 24th 1999 - Andy Chiavetta is developing a new process of making skimboards. The process uses "prepreg" carbon which differs from regular carbon in two ways. First it is unidirectional which means that all of the fibers run in one direction. Because of this it is only strong in one direction. Second there is no resin! Well that's not quite true. The resin is mixed in with the carbon and is heat sensitive so it cures when you cook it, literally. The carbon begins to cure at around 350 degrees Celsius. Andy Chiavetta has been making skimboards for 10 years. However, lately skimboard manufacturing has taken a back seat to him building airplanes (Out of fiberglass and Carbon!) for private customers. Two such boards have been manufactured to date, and while they are clearly lighter and stronger than any other board available, there are still some very serious problems to be worked out. The main problem has been getting the carbon to bond to the foam on the bottom without trapping any air. When there is trapped air, it causes the board to delaminate and break. This technology has been used in aerospace for many years however with the exception of one board (made 10 years ago by Ivan Ashaur's uncle) this is new technology to skimboarding. If this and other problems can be worked out, the technology will most likely be sold to Victoria Skimboards. Victoria World Championships - July 19th 1999 - Bill Bryan won the 23 annual Victoria World Championships for the seventh time last weekend. Erik Christensen, Tom Trager and Chris Hendersen rounded out the top four finalists. The waves were a respectable 3 to 4 feet and the conditions were fair to good. There was a large turn out of skimboarders this year and, due to the better than average waves, the skimboarding was very good. This years event was very enjoyable to watch. |
