Bill Bryan Wins The Vic (Again)
July 16, 2001
The waves held steady on Sunday which helped create
what was one of the best contests in recent memory. A huge pro
division turnout resulted in stiff competition throughout the two day
event. These were the top twelve pro's.
- Bill Bryan
- George Bryan
- Aaron Peluso
- Jeff Gomez
- Mike Stanaland
- Keith Peery
- Tom Trager
- Brad Evers
- Erik Christensen
- Grady Archbold/Jesse Westgaard (tie)
- none
- Nick Hernandez
Bill Bryan was in charge as usual. He took the
contest using his usual unmatched combination of new school tricks and
power skimming. He has no equal, enough said. George was
back on top proving once again that he is one of the most consistent
skimmers out there. I (Aaron Peluso) was stoked to have finally
cracked the top four on my home turf. What a relief! Jeff
Gomez was back in the finals for the second year in a row putting to
rest any claims that last years second place was a fluke. He is
one of the best power skimmers there is and proved it with speed and
grace. Rookie Mike Stanaland was turning heads all day long with
huge power skimming and took fifth place in his pro debut at the
Vic. Nice going Mike. Keith Peery was killing it with both
power moves and new school trickery. Tom Trager was ripping as
always. Still kicking ass 15 years later. Brad Evers was
killing it despite a sprained ankle and busting his board during
competition. He even took best ride with a sick backside down the
line with a pop big spin then tucking into a barrel. Sick!
Everyone was ripping and the difference between these guys was often no
more than one point.
The conditions on Sunday were slightly better than
Saturday all things considered. The waves were slightly smaller
but good for most of the day. As the tide came up in the afternoon
the waves stopped breaking well so the pro semi finals and finals
weren't held in the best conditions. Most of the contest had good
waves however and there was some top notch skimming to be seen.
The sun came out on Sunday, appropriate. Additionally the red tide
finally began to back off and seeing blue water for a change helped lift
spirits.
One of the only downsides of the contest were some
bummed riders who didn't get to compete because of "late"
entries. Check out this
article for the rundown.
All in all however it was a great event.
