The Vic Is Coming...
July 11, 2001

Well boys and girls, the time is approaching.  The Victoria Contest is literally the granddaddy of all skimboarding events.  It dates all the way back to 1977 when there were just a handful of competitors.  The professional skimboarding division would not be created for another decade.

Last years contest was graced with excellent waves, weather and turnout.  Not to mention a great vibe.  What will this year be like?  Check out the forecast from Surfline.com:

"The old SW swell will be on the way out tomorrow but a new one is on the way. This strong but shadowed SW swell (200-210) will begin to arrive late tonight. This will slowly build into 3-4'+ surf for most exposed areas by the afternon and into the evening tomorrow. By Friday the SW swell (reflecting the storms progress out of the South Pacific Island shadow) will strengthen into the 3+5'+ range for exposed spots, as it shifts farther south (195-205), and set waves near 2'+ overhead at the best breaks. This sized surf should hold into Saturday morning before slowly backing down through the rest of the weekend."

Additionally the weather is expected to be in the high 70's and low 80's.  By all indications it looks like we just might luck out again!  Time will tell however.  The sand at Aliso right now is not favoring a high tide at all and there are medium height high tides during the middle of the day through the weekend.  The wind has also been problematic lately.  It has been very strong onshore in the afternoons.  I (we) hope that this trend will decrease as the weekend approaches.  Let us also hope that the swell is large enough for the waves to break at high tide.  If those two things happen we could quite possibly have a repeat of last year.

I will have my fingers crossed.
