Brad Evers Wins Slotstik Contest
February 25 , 2002

A point tallying error resulted in George Bryan mistakenly being declared the winner.

Most of you probably know by now that in September 2001 the Slotstik contest went down in some of the heaviest contest conditions ever.  That day on the beach George Bryan was declared the victor after skimming a phenomenal final heat getting barrel after barrel.  As it turns out, he wasn't the only one!  Brad Evers was also clearly on fire getting the very best waves of the day, including one huge wrap in the final that you could have driven a small car through.

That day on the beach there were some who felt that Brad was incorrectly awarded third place.  How right they were.  Sometime after the contest took place Adrian Prince (owner of Slotstik Skimboards) decided to take a second look at the scorecards.  Normally on scorecards each judge will write each competitors scores in the same column.  For instance, every judge will write Bill's scores in the first column, Brad's in the second and so on.  Unfortunately the judges didn't do that in this final.  Compounding the problem, whoever added the scores forgot to make sure that each column belonged to the right rider.  This resulted in some riders getting other riders scores.  Unfortunately this resulted in the incorrect placements being announced.  The amended official results are as follows:

  1. Brad Evers*
  2. Bill Bryan
  3. George Bryan*
  4. Paulo Prietto
  5. Mike Stanaland
  6. Keith Peery

These changes do not have any affect on the UST Rankings.

This is a huge achievement for Brad.  This is his first major pro contest victory.  It is the first time he has beaten Bill Bryan in competition.  To the best of my knowledge it is the first time an east coaster has ever won a west coast contest.  And to do it all in such great conditions is simply a phenomenal accomplishment.  Congratulations to all the finalists who skimmed one of the best heats of the year.  And to Brad, way to go man, we all knew you could do it.
