Bryan Wins In Panama CityApril 14, 2002 By Brad Evers The 4th Annual Zap Gulf Coast Pro/Am Spring Skim Jam went down on April 6 & 7. The waves were minimal, but they were rivaled by the ever-present enthusiasm of the Panama City Beach crew. The locals were glad to see the traveling pros come to town and the crowd was as hyped as ever. The waves presented a challenge to each competitor, and some of the local Amateurs were going off, given the conditions. The Jr. Mens division was particularly close and intense as Richie Deoreo, Dustin Holland, and Blake Smetts fought energetically for the title. On Saturday, the waves were about 3 inches high and a boat just offshore was attempting to produce set waves by driving back and forth. If it weren’t for the boat, there would have been only flatland tricks and sprays, but the shin-high “set” waves allowed many skimmers to get some decent rides and airs. The second day blessed us with a 15 mph sideshore wind, which overnight produced knee-high left-hand weak liners right in front of the contest site. The day of the finals would prove to be a true test of the skimmers’ ability to ride any size wave. Few pros were able to get on the waves and ride them, but Keith Fanning, Drew Daniello, Brad Evers, and Bill Bryan were able to advance to the final by landing their shuvits, airs, and lip-bashes. The final was so close it seemed that everyone had tied, but ultimately, Bill won, Drew got 2nd, Brad got 3rd and Keith got 4th. $4,100 was split between the top 6 pros.
Along with the contest was a classic car show, paddle board race, some pro bodyboarders, and the Legendary Corky Carrol who now has a band which performed there Saturday night. It really was a great weekend that wouldn't of happened without Tony and Lib from Mr. Surfs, Harry Wilson, and all the other volunteers who always help with tabulating, announcing, and the set up of the contest.
