2002 Slotstik Contest October 10, 2002 A series of south swells this summer had Slotstik contest organizers on edge. Normally, big frequent south swells are a good thing. But this summer they were so abundant that a lot more sand was moving around than usual. Deer Creek, which doesn't have any sand much of the year, was rumored to have been completely dug out just days before the contest. Just in time however, a little wind swell picked up and filled in the beach for the contest. Of course, small wind swell doesn't usually make for the best conditions but sometimes you take what you can get. And although the waves weren't perfect, they were decent. 65 skimboarders turned out for the 10th annual competition this year. Low tide and fog dominated the morning while sunshine and wind took over the afternoons. DJ's Chris and Esteban Pujol kept things pumping on Saturday though. Morgan Just was on fire edging out Bill in the preliminary round. A group of female riders from Ventura got everyones attention by scoring some good rides. By Sat afternoon the word was out, Malibu was firing. Almost everybody in the contest migrated to Malibu for a classic session at a classic break. Many 50 yard rides were had in the near perfect conditions. On Sunday, conditions were pretty similar. The event got started early hoping to avoid heavy afternoon wind. The event was capped off by entertaining competition in the 30+ division. Steve Lawrence put on a show with a board transfer and a flip to beer chug. But eventually he got a little over ambitious and took a good spill during a board transfer that earned him best wipeout. At the end of the day Bill beat out the rest of the pros. Noogie Stevens took over the teenager division while Sam Stinnett continued his dominance of the super grom division. These were the top 6 Pros:
