South Laguna Skate & Surf Contest
March 9, 2003

By:  Aaron Peluso

There couldn't have been a more fitting location for a South Laguna Skate & Surf contest than Tortuava Beach.  Although the contest was originally scheduled for West St, the lack of swell forced a change in location.  Tortuava was the choice.  It is fitting not only because the beach is one of the few "private" coves in Laguna where there is no easy public access, but also because the owner of the shop grew up on that beach, throwing many fine beach bashes all the while.

The waves still weren't too big, but it was much more rideable than West St was.  Plus, the weather was so perfect it was hard to complain.  We all prefer perfectly glassy green one foot peaks to the the brown wind blown variety.

There was a great turnout for the event despite the access restrictions.  Well over 100 people migrated to the cove to compete or just to hang out with some friends.

The contest didn't start till around 11:00 in the morning due to the change of venue and the fact that most people were just having too much fun free skimming.

Due to the late start and good turnout the contest was still going strong well into the afternoon.  I had to leave around 4:30 and there were still several heats to be run including the pro semi's and finals.  But I have been told the final four were as follows.

  1. Bill Bryan

  2. Brendan Stevens

  3. Brandon Sears

  4. Miles Grobman

More results will be added when I get them.  It was clear from watching the contest that the level of riding this year will yet again be a big step over the previous year.  Congratulations to everyone who was ripping and especially Noogie who placed second in his first ever pro event.  Nice job.
