The San Diego Skim Fiesta November 15, 2003 By Ryon Graf |

There are many things that someone can do to put together a great contest. Setting a date with good tides, creating a flyer and making sure it gets out to people, managing supplies, and dealing with contest sponsors are all part of the job. However, if the waves suck there’s not much you can do about it, except have lots of fun anyway. Mother Nature did not cooperate for skim fiesta, providing knee to waist high sets with a nasty trough. But, the amateur division went off anyway. Riders from all over southern California displayed their versatility and creativity in a wide variety of styles that showcased the possibilities of skimboarding, despite the small surf conditions. Between divisions there was a rail skim session with guys entertaining the crowd with some pretty awesome falls. It’s a LOT harder than it looks…. Steve Taylor and Cabo Drew went at it in a close final that involved almost every foot trick imaginable. They made skimboards do things magical. Other noteables include Calvin Sloan who skimmed solid to a second place finish in his division and Duke Degan who busted a nice 540 shuvit to take his division. Morgan Just was a natural on the rail. He made it look sooo easy. Cabo Matt almost killed himself on it, but he didn’t seem to mind. Special thanks to our sponsors (Exile, Victoria, El
Grippo, SkimCenter, Poorboy, and SCSkim) for supplying the prizes and
supporting skimboarding in San Diego.
Also, much thanks to all the people that showed up and made Skim
Fiesta an awesome event. I hope to see you there next year. Results: Men’s: Junior Men’s Grommet 1)
