Virginia Beach, Virginia (August 20, 2007) – For over 20 years skimboarders from all over the east coast, and even a few from the west, have traveled to Virginia Beach at the end of August to compete in what is the last major Skimboarding contest of the season. Completely separate from SkimUSA which produces an East Coast Skimboarding Tour throughout the spring and summer, the ECSC Amateur Skimboarding competition is locally run by family man and VB Skim Series organizer Brian Edmonson.

Over the past 5 years the sport of skimboarding in Virginia Beach has grown ten fold. In past years the number of skimboarders on a given day at the local hot spot, the 14th street pier, was no more than 6 or 7. Currently there are days when 15-20 skimmers are crowded in the same spot vying for the same waves for hours on end. Other spots such as the municipal parking lot at Camp Pendleton are perennially crowded with young kids just learning and older more experienced skimboarders alike. With the average mid range skimboard costing $200 and the high end boards costing as much as $500, this amounts to the Virginia Beach community spending tens of thousands of dollars annually on skimboarding and skimboard related contests. More and more local shops are beginning to carry more skimboard related products, a testament to the growth of the industry.

Slowly, but surely, the image of skimboarding being simply a sport enjoyed on the thin film of water left over after a wave breaks is being eroded in favor of a more accurate picture. The sites spectators of the sport have, and will continue to, see of young to middle age adults carving waves harder, faster, and with more agility than surfers will not soon be forgotten. Truth be told, the waves in Virginia Beach are far better for skimboarding on any given day then they are for surfing. It is no small wonder then that many a child is passing up sitting on a board out in the water waiting for waves not even powerful enough to push them down the line in favor of a skimboard with which they can ride Virginia Beach’s powerful and plentiful shore break.
