Notes:
Jeff Gomez had the setup. His parents had a trailer in one
of the sweetest spots you could ever have one, Treasure Island.
Treasure Island (T.I.) is essentially the north end of Aliso,
and Jeff lived about 200 feet from it. All of this changed
however when TI was bought by Merrill Lynch and everybody,
including his parents, were paid to move. His parents are
living it up in a new sailboat, but Jeff no longer lives at
Aliso.
You wouldn't be able to tell by his skimming
though. Jeff started as a somewhat lackluster skimboarder (no
offense Jeff), but has steadily improved, becoming one of
the best skimboarders anywhere today. When the waves are
good in Laguna he is the guy that you can expect to see down
there catching everything in sight. He is all about the
quality of the ride, not about throwing in a shuvit to make an
otherwise mediocre ride seem better. I suppose you could
call it power skimming. Jeff has done well
in contests but has rarely broken into the top four except for
the 2000 Victoria contest where he got second in what is widely
considered to have been one of the best finals of all
time. Just more proof that when the waves are firing, he
is a force to be dealt with.
