Dauphin Island

One of the nicest spot on the gulf. Always some waves (in the end of the island) that are not too difficult to catch front or back side. Sometimes windy though. The waves usually range from 3 to 5 feet. It has a pleasant white sandy beach with warm water and nobody there (no life guard to tell you to leave also...).

-I10 to west (from Mobile,AL)
-exit to road 193
-all the way down 'till dauphin Island
-take a right once there toward the west part of the Island
-park near a private house near the dead end.
Total time 45 min from Mobile, AL

The Skim Hole, Mobil

If you live in Mobile, and you are a desperate skimmer, then this spot is for you. The "Skim Hole" consists of a creek with a bed about 10 feet wide. The water can be anywhere from 4' to 10' wide, depending on the last rain. The depth is usually perfect for effortless sand skimming, about 1"-3". The creek empties right into another creek with much deeper and colder water. If you get a good skim, you can skim right into it and just jump in. Sometimes people build ramps and launch into the big creek. On the average, there are 10 or less people skimming. It's not too crowded. Also, there is a really cool tree to jump out of, if you don't mind the 2 minute hike under the bridge and through the woods!

From I-65, exit at Airport Boulevard West. Go several miles until you reach Hillcrest (major intersection with red light). Take a left onto Hillcrest. Continue for several miles until you see a dirt road (trail) running parallel with the road on your left hand side. This will be just past the intersection with Girby Road. There are several places to exit onto this dirt road. Take one of the exits and continue down the dirt road parallel with Hillcrest until you reach the end. Park by the big concrete thing and the skim whole is to your left!

I have heard reports that this spot was demolished by some construction activity.  Unfortunately, it sounds like it no longer exists.

Gulf Shores, and Perdido Key

Gulf shores offer limited surf and medium shore break.  On days when the tide is out many pools are formed for wonderful sand skimming.   Perdido Key offers a little bigger shore break and always has tide pools.  Both places are great for all the local and visiting skimmers.

Get on I-10 and get off at the Loxely exit.
Take Highway 59 South until it ends (about an hour and a half)
At the end of 59 you are in Gulf Shores.

For Perdido Key
Take I-10 to Loxely exit
Take highway 59 to the new Foley Beach Express
Turn Left on Beach Express
Take Road until it ends (2 dollar toll for 2 axle vehicles)
Turn Left then go about two miles until you reach Orange Beach Marina Road
Turn Right and go until it ends
Turn Left Go About 2 Miles Cross the Bridge and you'll be in Perdido Key

"The Pass" on West Beach, Gulf Shores Alabama

This spot is where all us locals go, the break is good for gulf shores but not compared to east or west coast conditions vary all the time tide pools may form but that isn’t what we look for, shore break is a limited thing in gulf shores and this is the best place I have seen some crowds are there but you can just run them over for the most part.

Get on I-10 and get off at the Loxely exit. Take Highway 59 South until it ends (about an hour and a half) At the end of 59 you are in Gulf Shores take a right and head west on west beach blvd go to the first bridge I think it is the "Lee Callaway" but I’m not sure parking is limited so try to squeeze in somewhere make sure you are on the east side of the pass b/c that is the best skimming.

The Bay

Ok now this spot is a little harder to get to then Dauphin island or Gulf shores. This spot has an awesome low tide, and its one of the sweetest low tide spots I've ever been too. It never has crowds and never has any sidewash so no stuff to worry bout. This spot is awesome for 360's or more and for spin tricks.

Ok from Mobile go toward Dauphin Island, if u don't know how go back to the other skim spots in Mobile to get to Dauphin Island. Ok after u go over the fowl river bridge go about 4 or 5 miles more. On the way you'll cross about 3 little bridges and finally you’ll come to a straight away and look on your left side and there will be a big tower (don't be confused with the one before this one on the right side) and a little open field thing right after the green fence ends. Park or whatever and walk all the way to the end of the field and you’ll see the bay and you'll have to climb down a little hill and your there. Make sure its low tide before you come and when you do its one hell of a skim session awaiting.

Ben Secor

A good beach, but can be unpredictable. Very secluded, never more than 20-30 people at the beach at the absolute most. When it’s flat, the breaks are good and some great sand riding. Sometimes the beach is steep and I guess it is all about timing. If you live around here you probably already know about it, if not it is a little out of the way, but on a good day definitely worth it. Also be sure to go further down the road a few miles to Dave's hot- dog stand, you wont regret that.

It’s on Hwy 180, 9 miles west of Hwy 59. If you can’t find it, just stop somewhere and ask, they'll help ya out. It’s called Bon Secor national wildlife refuge.

Terry's Cove

This is one of the best surf spots in Orange Beach. The waves come in at about2-5 ft .high. When the surf is up, the skim is awesome!

Go throughout the Gulf state park until you come out at Lake Shelby. Take a left on the big road and keep going until you see a Days Inn. This whole stretch is called Romar beach. Park at the public parking lot is called Gulf State Park Cotton Bayou. There will be a big pier to your left when you get on the beach and the skim is always choice.

The Yacht Club

This spot is a good local spot. Mobile bay is  pretty lame for skimming anyway. The waves are usually 3 to 4 ft on a good day. The beach is about 300 yards long with a wide beach. Catch a good low tide high wind day and you are set for good skimming.

Go on North Section Street until you hit the El Guiro mexican restaurant. That is a four lane. Turn Left and go down the hill, the spot is straight ahead. You will see the water from the hill.
