Belgium The southern part of the Belgian coast is a really good place, especially for inexperienced skimmers, but good skimboarders can also have a lot of fun there especially when there's a lot of wind and the waves get bigger. The nice thing about our coast is that it is really flat because of the sand banks right at the shore, so you can just cruise down the coast (with enough speed from the start you can skim up to and with a lot of practice over 100 feet!). The best time for doing this is when the tide is all the way up and is starting to pull away. With a little bit of luck you can stay out there for three hours and more. When the wind comes up and the waves get bigger (of course never as big as surfing waves) one can also jump over some waves and after a while of practice ride them back in. So if you're close you've got to give it a try once. Especially when the sun is going down while you're skimming. That's a time to get the camera out. You can skimboard on the whole length between De Panne and Oostduinkerke. The best spots are in my opinion right in front of Sint-Idesbald and a bit more north between Sint-Idesbald and Koksijde. You can get there with the coast tram from Oostende. Get out at the last stop in Koksijde or the first in Sint-Idesbald. It may not be the best place in the world and maybe not worth a visit if you live in the USA. But I felt I had to do a bit of a represent for my home country. So where ever you are Have a good skim and catch a good wave. |
