The Sheraton Hotel in Rio de Janeiro

This is one of the best spots in Rio.  The wave breaks perfect at the high tide!  The best season is the summer (December, January, and February).  It is a really great spot!!!

It is located in front of Sheraton Hotel between Leblon and Sao Conrado off of Niemayer's road.

Rio De Janeiro Area

Leblon

Leblon beach is pretty close to Ipanema beach, they are only separated by a small channel.  You could say it's the same beach looking at it from a distance. There the waves don't break near the sand all the year but sometimes it gets classic for skimming.  The waves can reach 1.5 to 2 meters if your lucky, but most of the time its not a big deal.  It is where we got together and started skimming in this area.  Skimming crowds don't exist yet, and during the week u can skim it freely cause there aren't any rules against skimming.  Just watch out for the swimmers =).

Ipanema

One of the most famous beaches around here and internationally. Lots of swimmers, bodyboarders and surfers, especially on a hot shiny day.  Ipanema has almost the same formation of waves as Leblon.  Sometimes it gets classic and I have noticed that the barrels there are more frequent than in Leblon cause the wind doesn't blow as hard there.

Sheraton or Vidigal

I consider this the best spot for now.  The access is not that easy cause the beach is between hills and the hotel Sheraton blocks access in the middle of the valley (how nice of them =). If your not a guest of the Sheraton Hotel you can reach it through stairs built on the other side of the beach or walk on the rocks and cliff (the way we do) at the opposite side.  I have never skimmed there when it is really good but Wilson (a local shaper) said it gets really good.  He told me that sometimes things get pretty nasty there with huge waves. But its a real good spot, you can get barrels easy if your good enough and different types of waves for many cool moves.  You need to know the spot to catch real good waves, cause they are not that easy to find for a newbee but u get used to it quickly

Macumba

I have never been skimming there. I have only gone to surf and at that time I wasn't skimming so I didn't pay attention to skim conditions. Wilson said that he went there a few times and it was a real good spot for skimming and he thinks that the waves there are consistently breaking on the beach.

Recreio

Some of my friends skimmed there and they told me that the beach has potential for skimming but I don't know if its real good yet.

Maricaa

Located outside the city of Rio de Janeiro, my friend Serginho one of the first skimmers here told me that the waves there are real good and some days they are so big that u can't even skim cause it's too dangerous.

Sununga - Ubatuba

This is the best spot for skimboarding in the state of sao paulo... locals use round wooden boards but there is potential for a LOT more... the waves can be huge and i have heard many stories of people ending with broken legs... if there is a north component to the swell then it will hit the rock wall to the south and come across diagonally.

Go to Ubatuba about 3 hours north of Sao Paulo and find sununga beach (ask locals)

Pauba Sao Sebastiao, Brazil

It’s a right-handed huge side wash that receives big swells, it can get 15feet easy. A Brazilian big rider got tetraplegic in there. Once you get the timing you can get sick barrels...I mean this spot is unbelievable, I saw once an American guy score like a 3, 4 second barrel within 10 foot of wave. The thing is that the sidewash hit the wave when it go over the sand....it’s not a wave. It’s a sort of phenomenon. I’ve got a pic with a knee boarder in a 15ft"pure lip" beast. It’s real, it’s sick!!

From São Paulo, you got to take "Rodovia Dos Imigrantes" which is the road that takes you from the capital to the beach.  Follow the signs for GUARUJÁ and than after you pass thru an industrial part start fallowing the directions to São Sebastião. The nightclubs in that part of Brazil are the bests, full with chicks, accommodation hospitals.... but although it is still a very beautiful place...

Itamanbuca-Ubatuba

This place is really nice, the waves are about 3-4 feet and you can get really good rides. This beach is also a good spot to surf. World-wide tournaments are presented there.Normally a good season to skim there is on the summer in Brazil that is from November to February.

To get there you just go to Ubatuba and from there you go north after 20 minutes drive you are gonna see a sign, Itamanbuca Beach then you take a left and go strait until you get to the water then SKIM.

Itaquatiara

I grew up skimming in Newport Beach Ca, and I recently found a skim break in Brasil. This is a break about 40 kilometers outside of Rio. The shorebreak is nothing less than amazing.. The beach has a webpage at www.Itaquatiara.com . This beach is 10 times better than any spot in Rio, including Ipanema, Leblon ,the Sheridon Hotel or Recreo Beach. This beach is a must visit spot if you are ever in Rio. I would even go so far as to suggest having a contest here.

I don’t remember the directions to the specifics. I never actually drove the car there myself. All I know is that you go over the 7 mile long bridge to get out of Rio. But if u stop at any surf shop in Rio, they will be able to give you directions for sure. Or you can check out www.itaquatiara.com ..

Praia Mole

Well,it’s not so good...it has its good days, best in the afternoon, it’s kinda wierd, hard to tell where the wave is gonna break. About once every 5 minutes a nice wave rolls through. Really nice for boosting airs, alright for riding waves but barrels are few and far between. Gigantic crowds but no one goes in the water for some reason.

Just ask someone in Florianopolis, they will know
