Cabo San Lucas Solmar Recommended One of the best known skimming breaks in Cabo San Lucas is Solmar. Solmar is a very hard breaking wave. It lies just to the east of Lands End (the southernmost point of Baja California) so it catches swells from every direction: west, south and east! The wave is a lot like Aliso except it breaks harder. Mostly just a hard shore pound with the big waves and steep beaches that Cabo San Lucas are famous for. There is a sidewash at the eastern end of the beach which I have only caught working once. Solmar is also very fickle. One day it will be perfect and the next crappy or vice versa. One day it works best on high tide and the next day it might work best at low tide! This is because of all the sand movement that takes place due to the powerful currents near the tip of Baja. One time when I was there, it was eight foot right onshore the first day. The second day there was a hurricane and the third day I could barely see the waves they were so far out! Seems logical since there was a hurricane and all but on the fourth day it was huge right onshore again. Anyway, my point is, keep an eye on it! Solmar Beach is oddly enough located right in front of the Solmar Hotel! Unfortunately I cant explain exactly how to get there but ill try. When you drive into Cabo San Lucas from San Jose Del Cabo you end up on a street that goes into the hills. Once you get to the main intersection in town take a left and follow the road right next to the harbor. The road goes in a sort of half circle around the bay until it heads almost due south. You will notice that you leave the 'heart' of the town. After you go over two or three speed bumps there will be a road that curves off to the right and goes up a hill. Take that road and at the end will be Solmar Hotel. The hotel may or may not let you walk through the place. I have always found a way to get through so I don't know an alternate route to get to the beach. Just walk in like you own the place! Solmar is a nice hotel and would probably be a cool place to stay if your willing to put up that much cash. Solmar Hotel should be on all the tourist maps. You can pick one up at the airport in San Jose Del Cabo. Submitted by webmaster@skimonline.com More on Solmar Its at the very tip of the Baja Peninsula where the Sea of Cortez meets the Pacific ocean. The skimming is hard core and the shore break half the time is 8ft and way up. Good for big tricks and tubes. If you're crazy enough as a beginner to get out there you will improve very quickly... or you'll be drug by the under toe to Mazatlan. Take a taxi from anywhere in town and say you are going to Sol Mar or Terra Sol Hotels (next to each other). Go through either but try to not let security see the boards, they don't want the tourists to be scared off by some down and roudy skimmers. When you reach the sand just walk all the way to the left down the beach until you reach rock cliffs. There you are, and no one is ever in the water~ usually just some randoms, about maybe 8. But the beach is a mile long and has plenty of room to do whatever you want without disruption. If security tries to tell you you cant skim~ its a public beach! do what you want. If any question email me . Submitted By: cABODAWg51@AOL.com Cabo Overview Hey, ok, everyone
skims Cabo but no one ever goes to San Jose,, When theirs a storm
or something, San Jose gets some huge on shore barrels. OK, 1st place. Estuary, look for
the hotel ' el presidente' hotel, walk along the hotel until u get to
the water then go left towards the coast, you could skim in front of the
hotel, it gets good their, or if you want some sweet wannabe siders/down
the liners, keep walking to the little point. There are no rocks
in any of these beaches. If
u go towards Cabo more, you'll find zippers (the only surf beach in San
Jose) ask any local where it is, and they'll tell you if you cant find
it. Their the shore break is a lot of fun if your good at skimming
on top of rocks, and have good board control, just don't piss off the
surfers, if they grab a wave, they will ride it right to the sand, so
don't try to be a big shot cuz you'll get you ass kicked. If you walk a little
bit over from zippers towards the hotels, you'll see a soccer field,
right in front of it is a fun place to skim, and usually have powerful
barrels. no rocks here. Now, in Cabo you can
skim at villas del palmar, (drowning sl#ts) just ask for the hotel if
you cant find it, here. its rare to have a consent break, but when it
does, it will go big, JUST BE CAREFUL, because in the water their is a
piece of wall or something with a piece of re-bar striking out of if, it
will just rip your board up. (i almost ripped my nose off) and if the
security guards give u shit, just say your staying in a room, make up a
number like 306 or something and some weird last name. One of my favorite
places to skim in Cabo is lovers beach, becuse their are no rocks, a
nice sider, and normal barrel waves. Just
find a guy driving around on a boat and wave him down, if they give you
a price, tell them youll give them less, and they'll usually accept it.
One of the best places to find a boat is on the marina, usually they
give the cheaper rides. just make sure you tell them to pick you up. And
if you want, when your at lovers, u can walk over to Solmar, its just
around the rocks. Getting into Solmar
is probably the worst you wont be able to get in threw Solmar hotel
unless your staying their, or you run as fast as you can threw the
lobby, the only really other way is to go through the hotel next to it,
you can walk in between the 2 hotels. Your
allowed to walk back threw Solmar if you want, and the cant do anything. Another place to go
is in Pedregal, the residential area, (ask anyone and they'll tell you
how to get their) u can either walk to the beach and it takes forever,
or ask people driving threw for a lift, they will usually pick you up
cuz they cool rich Americans on holidays.! If you have a car,
and can find your way to the old light house, then that's another place
to skim. (its on the same stretch as Pedregal, just way the heck down
the beach). Their
is also the famous Punta Lobos, to get their you have to drive to Todos
Santos, drive threw the town, and you will see a sign on your left with
red letters, go down that rode, and you'll find the beach. If
you want to go to where the contests are, you have to walk like an hour,
or get a dune buggy. Pretty much the hole
coast line in Cabo or San Jose has skim spots, just watch out for
currents, and dead fish and stuff like that. OK, well I hope this
has been some help, and if you need more details, just write me back and
ask, byebye, stephan s Submitted By: turkeyskim@hotmail.com |
