The Cayman Islands

Royal Palms, Grand Cayman

Along the famous 7-mile-beach of Grand Cayman there is one particular spot that is popular for the few skimboarders that we have here. Royal Palms is a bar and restaurant on the beach and there are restrooms, a free showers, changing rooms, and drinking water. The beaches can become relatively flat at times allowing long beach skims. Only during the summer season when "North-Westers" hit the island are there large waves and huge beach skim. The riders here are fairly intermediate and 99% of skimming is on the sand. If you ever plan to come here to skim, bring your board because there are no skim shops.

West Bay road wll be your most traveled road during your visit. It runs North and South along the Seven-Mile-Beach. About half way up the beach you will find Royal Palms. Look for a large parking lot and a blue and white wall, you can't miss it. "Royal Palms" is arched over the entrance.

Westin

This spot is usually the best on the island if there is any swell.  During the winter months there are a few storms that come through from the north west, bringing up swell on the west side.  The shore break pounds here and was up to about 6 feet and glassy this past Christmas.  Even in small conditions, this spot will have a face to hit and small liners.

Head up the West Bay Road to the Westin Hotel on the beach side.  Its just past the Links golf course.  If you reach the Public Beach, you've gone to far.

South Sound

Down here a lot of the riders are advancing to wave riders and South Sound is one of the only places on the island were there are waves almost all year.  This is due to the fact that there is no sand were the wave breaks....its reef.  Although the sand is some of the softest on the island, it doesn’t tend to move outward.  There tends to be a lot of backwash on big days, but when the waves are smaller (2 feet) it is the best.  When they are smaller they are more powerful.  This is a secluded beach only stretching about 150yd or so.

This skim spot is located in South Sound just to the East of the South Sound Community Center. As you come out the beach walls, you will see reef but towards the East there is sand and the best waves on the island.  This skim spot is located almost at the South West tip of the island.  It is a Community center so you don’t have to worry about parking and there is a shower along the back wall of the building.
