Charlestown, Rhode Island (map) Q.E.B This is an excellent spot all year round. Even in the summer it is skimable 4 out of 5 days. It is only really rideable for about 4 hours surrounding high tide. Often tubing, always powerful enough to ride though. Usually a solid 1 to 2 foot. I've seen it as big as 5 to 6 though. Its got a very nice slope on the beach so you can get plenty of speed. On the south side of the rocks is a private beach and a few locals there are really hard core (and pretty good) so you don't want to piss them off if you go there. its about 300 yards south of the parking lot. the great thing about this spot is that just on the far side of the rocks a wedge has occasionally been known to pop up of the rocks. its a left and super hallow. you can only make it out to the wave at dead high tide though. To get there get on rt. 1 and there is a road called something beach rd. It is about 100 yards north of the mini golf. This is about 10 south of the Matunik exit. If you hit Misquamiquit you have gone to far. At the end of the road is a shack where you park. the beach is right out front. Submitted By: "Andy Birk" abirk82@hotmail.com East Beach (Blue Shudders) East Beach is where I have been skimming for years. It can be a premier skimboarding spot and other days it sucks. The beach is constantly changing from year to year. Most of the time its fairly steep. You can pick up some good speed before hitting shore break. The best time to skim is 2 hours before high tide. This is when it starts to get big and will be good for a few hours. The waves are usually around 2 feet or less. The days when it gets up to 4 or five are the best. IF you go on a calm day when the water is real glassy and its big then perfect skimboarding conditions are there. About 6 days last summer (`99) it was perfect. The rest were descent. The directions: From providence 95 South, 4 South, Route 1 South
(route 4 turns into 1), stay on 1 for 15-20 mins until you see the East
Beach Road sign. Take the U turn and go strait down East Beach Road
until you get to East Beach (Blue Shudders Beach). Submitted By: Ryan Pincince. skimqeba@aol.com OR rp1239@alpha.rwu.edu Quonochontaug Beach, Central or East - charlestown The waves in east beach are perfect for doing flips
or getting air and the water gets deep close to shore so you don't have
to worry about hitting the sand. Central beach is right next to east
beach. The waves there are more for free riding and doing 360's or
cutbacks. I think it is in the top three of skim locations in rhode
island. Most of the kids there have poly vacs or foamies so if you plan
on going there dont bring a woody or those crappy zap boards. The best
time to go is around august. The waves are good in the eairly morning
and around 7:00 at night. Thats good cuz no one is swimming at those
times. from narragansett hed south on route one for about 17 miles you will be in charlestown. on your left will be a Texico right after it take a left down west beach road. go all the way down untill you can either go right or left. go left. right there you will see the ocean. ride down to the end of the road and take a right. go right untill you reach a parking lot. you can't get in between 8:00 am to around 5:00 pm because it is a private beach but if you go to the beach next to it you can get in for 5 bucks. if you know someone in the area they should have a guest card and you can use that. good luck.
