Dewey Beach The Main Break One of the best skimming spots on the east coast exists in the second smallest state within the union, Delaware. Although there are several good skimming sites on this states coastline, Dewey Beach is by far the best. This is the only area on the east coast I have visited that truly is beach break. This area is ideal for skimmers and is truly the east coast capital of skimming. Any section of beach within the township is good for skimming however, due to the crowds and such, the northern most stretch of beach is by far the best. There is a rock jetty that separates Dewey from the neighboring community of Rehobeth Beach. This jetty is a perfect spot for riding waves at high tide since the waves peel right or left depending which side you are on. I've ridden this break during the summer months on and off for the past seven years and am convinced it is the best within the state. Best time to ride is definitely high tide, since the beach is so steep this is the only time to get adequate run up for setting up. On a good day, 3-4 foot waves are common within 5-10 feet off shore. Typically the waves have good form and are steep enough for aerials. Editors Note: I am informed that the jetty mentioned in this article hasn't broken in about 5 years. Dewey beach is very easy to get to. Follow Route 1 which runs directly through Dewey and park somewhere within the township. Parking requires a season pass so you will have to pay at a meter or at one of the side lots. Alternatively, follow signs to Rehoboth and park on the south side of the township. Parking is free and you can easily walk to the southern most jetty of this township. As a side note, while in Dewey check out a jammin club called the Bottle & Cork. Any questions or comments beyerb@aa.wl.com. Till death DEWEY skim! Submitted by beyerb@aa.wl.com
South Side In addition to the Dewey Beach article on the skim page, I would like to tell about a place a few miles outside of Dewey called South Side. It's the most powerful shore break in Delaware. This is my most favorite spot to skim. Not only is it powerful, it's big, too! On an average day, 4-5 foot waves roll in to pound the shore about 10 to 15 feet out. On an incredible day, we've seen 7 footers rolling in. Now this spot isn't a wish come true so it's not always good, but we can usually depend on South Side for great skim. The best time to go is when the tides are changing, either from high to low, or low to high, it doesn't really matter, but don't ever go on dead high or dead low.....you'll never reach the waves. In order to get to South Side, head southbound out of Dewey down route 1 until you hit a big bridge, this bridge goes over Indian River Inlet. Go over the bridge and as soon as you get completely over get on the right turnoff, follow that road back under the bridge and you will come to a toll booth, pay your money to get in and your there!!! This place is a state park and the lifeguards have set certain boundaries where people cannot skim, you can't skim within the orange flags when the lifeguards are on duty. You must go outside of the orange flags in order to skim. Submitted By, gshupe@dol.net More On the South Side I think south side has already been listed, but I
am so fond of it that I felt the need to say something about it.
You do have to pay, and you do have to deal with life guards. They
kick you further and further down (south) the beach as it gets more
crowded, and they usually turn thier heads when the swimmers start to
push their boundries. Eventually you get pushed into a small area
between the swimmers and the surf-fishers. This is why timing is
crucial. Find out when the tides are changing before 10 am or
after 5 pm. If you go in the middle of the day expect to be pissed
off as you walk past some incredible shore break that is off limits due
to swimmer's interests. Once the guards leave, though, so do the
people. Also, at the northern part of the south shore is a jetty.
It is usually to flat for anything, but once in a while you can grab a
side wash there. Oh yeah, don't be shy around the locals, they are
all cool as hell. If you are heading south on route 1 make a right after the Indian River Inlet Bridge and follow signs. If you are going north, than make a right just before the bridge. The bridge is located about midway between Dewey and Bethany Beaches. Submitted By: jmpst79@pitt.edu North Side Hi Tide is the best for wave riding but low is the
best for sand surfing. You can skim ALL DAY and don't have to
leave because of lifeguards or crowds. It is $5 to park and the
waves aren't great but they are consistantly 2-4 feet and if you surf
you can surf all day too. It is nothing like South Side but you
can skim all day and the rocks along the inlet create a nice wave to
ride. After a storm a lot of debree comes onto the shore and that
can slow you down. Also watch out for surfers who stand right in
front of you and block you from getting to the wave. When you pay
the parking fee it doesn't work for South Side you have to pay again.
You should have fun When you are in Dewey Beach head south down route 1 and when you come to the bridge DON'T go over it make a right just before you go onto the bridge and pay $5 and SKIM. Submitted By: Suzyglugun@aol.com
