Illinois
Langdon Beach

A good place to skimboard if your ever on the Great lakes, is Langdon
beach, in Wilmette Illinois.  It is on Lake Michigan, just north of Chicago.
It gets good when north/northeast wind cause it to break really nicely for
skimboarding.  Waves can get  anywhere to .5 to 5 feet.  Email me for
directions.  It does get windy, so a heavier board is probably preferred, but
you can still get buy on a light board.  Another spot i know of that I am going
to check out this summer is Indiana dunes national lakeshore, in Michigan
city, Michigan.  I talked to a guy who skims there and he says check it out.

More on Langdon

There are some pretty good spots for skimboarding on lake Michigan.  One is
Langdon beach, which is about 20 minutes north of Chicago.  It breaks year
round on east or northeast winds, and sometimes northwest.  It breaks over an
underwater pier which is really shallow.  Some days you can get really long
rides on the waves that break there. From Chicago, take lake shore drive to
Sheraton, turn left, and turn right on lake, and there you are.

Chestnut Beach, Wilmette

On this long beach, the skimming is best for sand skimming only.  Some days are good for wave skimming, but it is very rare.  It is best during the summer months (May-October) and impossible in the winter months.  There are very few people and you will have the beach to yourself, It's great!

From Chicago, take Lake Shore Drive north to Sheridan Road, till you hit Chestnut Ave. and turn right to park along the street, the beach is on the right of Sheridan Rd.  It is hidden by a small park, but follow the path down to the water.

Private Beach, Wilmette

Private Beach It is near the Plaza Del Lago Jewel. If you go from there the entrance (I can't spell) to the public beach is just south of the last Old Folks building. You walk south on the beach until you get to where there is currently a house under construction(9/6/200)and drop everything there except for your board and walk out into the water. There is a spot where the water is only about 1-3 inches deep and seems to be great for skimming (when the waves are small).

Take Sheridan road into Wilmette. When you reach the Plaza Del Lago Park your car and take your stuff south until you reach the first park after the Old folks home then walk through the park until you reach the beach. Then walk south along the beach until you reach the house under construction.

Lake Forest Beach, Lake Forest, Illinois

This is a really fun place to skim.  At the city beach there are four harbors made by stone jetties.  The sand is fairly steep here but it bends around so if you're going fast it's fine.  This is the same place I surf so you can get some good waves here.  The waves break biggest on a NE wind, but you can get them on NW, E and SE too.  If you go north of the city beach there are some private beaches that are a little flatter.  Right after the furthest north harbor a little river comes out so look there first.  The sand is always changing there however, so one day it could be kinda rocky, and the next perfectly flat sand.

Take Deerpath Rd. in Lake Forest all the way to it's easternmost end.  You will be right next to the lake.  Take a left at the stop sign and then a right into the beach entrance.  To park "Legally" you need a Lake Forest sticker.  If you're worried about a ticket/fine try and find a place to park on one of the side roads in east Lake Forest.
