Los Angeles County

Thornhille Broome is located a couple of miles north of Leo Carrillo.  Big southern hemi swells turn into sick hollow ground pounding shore break that can be kind of dangerous at high tide.  The far north side of the stretch of beach is usually the best.

To find it from Malibu, get on PCH and go to the far north until you almost enter Ventura county.

Seal Beach

Seal beach is one city south of Long Beach and can get very good for skimming on the south side of the pier. However, Seal can also be extremely bad for skimming. Under the pier there's a sea wall that throws a nice right sider on a west or northwest swell. Tips for when to catch seal good:
1. check it everyday. Chances are unless your from seal or Long Beach you will never get this spot good. One exception to this rule is Brad Dickey who seems to show up whenever Seal is epic. ( I personally think that Brad secretly lives in Long Beach but is embarrassed to tell people that he's from there)
2. If it was good the day before, its never good the next day
3. NEVER go there with Aaron Peluso or Andy Chiavetta. (Its always bad when they show up)
4. Hit it before 11:00am or after 6:00pm as its always windy in the afternoons.
5. Don't even bother to check it in the Summer
6. NEVER listen to Sprafka, he'll always lie and tell you its better than it is. This is usually because Sprafka gets lonely skimming Seal by himself and will entice you to skim with him. Sprafka also just enjoys lying and has developed it into an art form.

Seal beach is located south of Long Beach and is right by the pier which can be found on any map.

Malibu

First point at Malibu is not only for the longboarders. On certain days the skimming is unbelievable. The best spot (if you want to ride some waves) is directly in front of the rest rooms. Since Malibu is a point break , when the waves reach the shore there coming in at an angle so they are a little bit easier to get on. If your just messing around on both sides of pier (real close to the pier) it sometimes sees a little bit of action. Watch out for local skimboarders Matt & Nishan (I hear that there real dicks) but they do have their own skimboard company A&D SKIMBOARDS and they've got some killer shapes and designs.

If you don't know where Malibu (surfrider beach) is you must be crazy. FROM THE VALLEY-take the101 to Las Virgenes-Malibu Canyon Rd. Make a left at the end of Malibu canyon and your there. FROM THE COAST- you know where it is.

Killer "V" - Los Angeles Harbor

My name is Jimmy" Whisper" Vensel. I have been checking out the skimboard news, I feel like I have an obligation to share what I know about this place we locals. call the killer "V'', It is located at the end of Carrillo beach in San Pedro, It is a snug little spot nestled between the L.A. harbor break wall & a small jetty, there is just about 60 to 70 yards of beach at a slope that pumps some of the gnarliest shore break I have ever seen!! It breaks on a west swell, But it doesn't  Break all the time, I'VE seen it at 4 to 6 & it just eat us alive, anything bigger than that is unrideable. Its not a known spot because we like to keep it that way, but after reading about all those other spots I felt it my duty to share this place with my fellow SKIMBOARDERS.

Zuma Beach - Malibu Area

One of my favorite spots is "westward" Zuma BEACH.  It has a good steep slope in certain parts of the shore and rocks are minimal.  It faces west and can be good with any swell direction.  Its best at tides from 4.0 to 5.5 I estimate.  Waves from 3 to 5 feet are most skimmable.  Anything bigger and it tends to break beyond skim reach.  This beach is good 2 hours before high tide and 1 after usually.  Sometimes it goes bad very quickly after high tide. For 1 year this beach has been consistently good.  What can happen is this spot can go flat sand and the waves go beyond reach. The rest of the beach north of  westward is pretty flat, great for beginners.  When its good here you got thick powerful waves with good "double ups".  Best time of year I think; is spring, late summer, and early fall.  In the summer there are plenty of people who don't figure out your a fast moving vehicle, so please take care!  ALL TIME spot to meet women!

Zuma beach is in the city of Malibu.  To get there you need to get to PCH (HWY1).  A little west of Kanan Dume Canyon Road and PCH is Westward Beach rd.  Your here!  Free parking for all.  If your antisocial (like many skimmers) and you see a big friendly dude with tattoos skimming, "Stay away" from this man. He will annoy you with his hospitality.  For updated conditions, will reply to all.  I go to this spot once every week or two.

E mail me at   skimdog31@yahoo.com

Note:  This spot is personally recommended by the Skim Online Webmaster.

Malibu Area  -  Escondido

In the city of Malibu there is a spot. Escondido.  I skimmed there hard for 2 years.1998 and 1997.I was told about this spot by a pro skimmer in Ventura in 1995.Its history goes back a ways.  A lot of local skimmers have told me they wraped this spot in the 80s and early 90s. Unique because there are houses right on the sand.  If the tide and or swell is too big your board will smack on the wood or concrete pilings under the houses.  Wraps on this beach are among the best anywhere, i think. In part due to the houses the sand slope never goes away.  The waves (and slope) you can always get to except low low tide.  When its good you get a little thickness to the waves and down the line is great.  Tides 6 ft and under, don't forget the swell factor.  Ok now, rocks come and go in the space of 1 or 2 days.  I've seen no rocks on Tuesday, on Saturday the place is a rock quarry.  During high tide you can always find a little area with no rocks.  1997 and 1998 no rocks to speak of but 1999 spring they came back.  I go by every 1 or 2 weeks.  Also the place does lack power a lot of times.  Always worth a look!

Get there:  PCH (hwy1)between Malibu Canyon Rd and Kanan Canyon Rd a little east of paradise cove there is a concrete bridge at street level "Escondido creek", on the direct east side of the bridge there's the gate and steps to the beach.  Parking on either side of PCH is plenty and free.

Malibu Area - Deer Creek

Deer Creek is the home of the Gold Coast Skim contest. Deer Creek works mid to high tide on any swell. Deer Creek has a south and north cove. North side is the most consistent. Deer Creek fires best mid summer to fall, or whenever there is plenty of sand. If you want to see deep driving barrel rides and hear some smack, show up when Adrian Prince (Slotstik) and Rick Stark are ripping. Deer Creek is not for the thin skinned, to ride be prepared to hear the smack and be heckled, but remember a fat barrel ride is all the scoreboard you need.

To sample Deer Creek get on the P.C.H. and look for Deer Creek road south of Pt Mugu and north of county line.   (MAP)

Rat Beach, Palos Verdes

RAT Beach is a nice shorebreak just below Torrance beach where I skim. You can easily run, skim out, make the turn and ride little 1-3 foot shorebreak on any given day. Beginners can ride out 5-8 feet and ride the whitewash (1 ft.) and more advanced people can go out farther (8-10 ft.) and ride the bigger breaks. Those aren't the real waves of the beach (you know, surfing, bodyboarding) but they are the farther in ones that are possible to skim out to. The waves there are good for beginners and a fun little place for advanced people to just chill. It usually isn't very crowded. There are little kids and adults on the beach, and not many people in the water.

Ok, to get there, just remember the name. RAT stands for Right After Torrance. It is just below Torrance beach. If you o to Torrance beach look down at the less crowded, quieter beach where Palos Verdes residents go. It is in between the bottom of Torrance Beach and the top of Lunada Bay. In case you don't know where those places are, Torrance beach is south of Redondo, which is south of Hermosa, which is south of Manhattan.

More on Rat Beach

This Beach in Palos Verdes, is a place no one knows about, and if you go on week days there's not annoying swimmers and little kids!! Its a great place for first time skimmers, lots of area to try new tricks and just coast... spring is the best time to go .

from the 405, get off on Pch take pch north  really really long way turn left on Palos Verdes Blvd take it all the way up tp malaga cove plaza turn right towards ocean and the long walk down the ramp is at the parking lot of Rolling Hills prep.

South Bay of Los Angeles

South Bay of Los Angeles (Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach and Redondo Beach) are not known for their great skimming spots, but if one is diligent and patient, there can be some to be found.  During the summer time, south sides of Hermosa and Manhattan Piers a little shore pound found at high tide on a small west swell.  El Porto sometimes gets some liners and shore pound on a small to medium southwest to west swell at high tide.  During the fall, winter, and spring, south of Redondo Pier on a medium west to northwest swell at high tide some shore pound can be found.  On a low tide, take a look inside of Redondo Pier complex, there is sometimes rideable liners and shore pound.  Watch out for Community Service officers because they will kick you out.  If you are visiting LA, and you have sometime, go south to Newport or Laguna Beach, but if you are staying by LAX, these spots are worth checking out.

Check out MapQuest for directions.

Westward Beach

This beach has unbelievable shorebreak.  I noticed someone put that there was good skimboarding in Malibu around Zuma Beach.  This is kind-of where it is located.  The skimboarding at Zuma is crap, not shorebreak at all.  I go there as often as possible, but I have seen as big as eight- foot shore break there, and on average there is 3-5 foot shorebreak.

When PCH comes down and turns right and travels along Zuma, make a left there.  This beach is hidden beneath mountains, its not hard to find.

Topanga Beach

During the winter, Topanga is the most consistent and best spot in the LA area.  As long as you have a solid north swell and a high tide, Topanga is almost always pumping.  The only problem with Topanga.Topanga is best during the winter, and  isn’t even worth the trip during the summer because other spots near by are better on south swells. There are many spots that are close by that break better on south swells.

To get to Topanga, take PCH to Topanga canyon bvld. To the north of the intersection is a parking lot for the beach. sometimes you can snag a spot right above the skim beach in the parking on the shoulder of PCH.

Temescal Canyon

Temescal canyon is a wide stretch of beach that always seems to have a good slope at high tide. In the winter, if you catch Temescal on a big tide and a strong swell, its almost a guarantee that you will get good shorebreak. Temescal seasonally gets rocks during the summer, but during the winter is completely rockless. The beach gets good liners and can be really fun when working well. In the summer, the beach can get really crowded, but by the time the crowds show up, the beach is probably already blown out. Temescal is best at a high tide, the higher the better, and takes all big swells.  It generally gets good two hours before high tide and starts breaking too far out about an hour after high tide. Go north of the street light to find the best skim.

To get there, take PCH to Temescal canyon road. at the light, go up the Temescal road and find parking on the street to avoid the six dollar parking in the beach lot. Down on the beach, if you see a concrete pathway go to the right and you will find the most skimmable beaches.

Pierview

Down the beach from Surfriders in Malibu is a spot that can be head high while the pier is barely waist.  Only a small walk from Surfriders, Pierview can be pumping overhead barrels while Surfriders is shut down from too much tide. The beach can be fickle, but during the summer time it is generally consistant.  Pierview takes south swells and gets rocky during the winter. If you are ever skimming the pier and wondering why the shorebreak is so small if the sets outside are so large, then jog down the beach in front of the Pierview restaurant and you won't be disappointed... to the left of the pier!

Go to Surfriders beach in Malibu. Pierview is 200 yards south of the pier.
