The Good

The thing that really sets this video apart from previous releases is not the footage, or the great music.  It is sheer editing acumen which puts this video over the top.  Vortex Children is a step above all other skimboarding videos because the editing quality has gone through the roof.  The segments are put together with an artistic flare previously reserved for big name surf videos (and other extreme sports).

But this does not detract from other quality advancements.  Take the music for instance.  For years I have criticized the music selection in 10th St Bros videos.  I am happy to say that this time around I can't say the same.  Every song in the video works and keeps the flow going.

But in the end, this is a skimboarding video, and no amount of music or editing can replace quality footage.  This video has it.  Footage from all over the country peppers the video but the most notable footage comes from The Wedge, especially in the first of two (!) Bill Bryan segments (and he can fill them out).  While the waves aren't as massive as seen in some previous wedge segments, the quality of the wave riding is top shelf.  Remember, it's not the size of the wave, it is how you use it.

The Bad

That said, there were a few too many small wave shots for my taste.  In my mind if you are riding a knee high wave you have got to do something spectacular to make it a really great ride.  Sometimes the riders came through, other times they didn't.  A couple of the riders segments seemed to be filled out with relatively mediocre skim footage to take up an entire segment.  Also, a significant number of the shots were zoomed in really far.  It adds to the artistic quality but started to wear on me after a while.  Overall the wave quality was solid, but still on the same level as previous videos (except for maybe a few rides).  The editing and music are what help it so much.

Although the editing is superb, it does look a lot like a Volcom video.

Summary

At the current time I would have to say that I think this is the best video ever made.  That's really the bottom line.
